Primary 5, 6 and 7 visit Downpatrick Gaol

19th Oct 2016

On Wednesday 12th October 2016 Primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils visited Downpatrick Gaol.  Primary 6 and 7 children have been learning all about 'Crime and Punishment' through their World Around Us topic.  As visitors to the site, we were able to see the conditions in which the prisoners were kept, take a look inside restored cells complete with displays on individual prisoners, and we also had the opportunity to stroll through the Gaol courtyards.  To end our visit, we were involved in an art and craft activity in which we created bonnets to commemorate the convict women of Australia as these were worn by women at the time.  There were many art materials to explore and we particularly enjoyed sewing the different fabrics onto our bonnets.  We had a fantastic tour of the Gaol and Museum and there was most certainly a feeling of 'spookiness' in the air - just in time for Halloween.
